Call For Papers: Expression, Language, and Music (ELM2), second Meeting

The Second Biennial Conference on Expression, Language, and Music (ELM2) will bring together researchers from linguistics, philosophy, cognitive science, music theory, dance theory, anthropology, and neurobiology with the aim of integrating recent findings and insights from diverse perspectives concerning the significance of expression in music, dance, and language, the importance of systematic structure in these domains, and the interrelations between expressive, musical, and communicative capacities and their relevance for understanding music cognition and language and their emergence in ontogeny and phylogeny.

Keynote Speakers:

      ELM2 follows the inaugural conference held in Aug 20-22, 2022, which featured Tecumseh Fitch, Kathleen Higgins, Ray Jackendoff, Jerrold Levinson, Elizabeth Margulis, Isabelle Peretz, and Ljiljana Progovac as keynote speakers and was a great success, contributing to insightful discussions and collaborations among scholars from diverse disciplines.

      We welcome abstracts on topics including but not limited to: expression of emotions through speech, gesture, dance, and music, evolution of communication, meaning and structure in language and music, music cognition, psychology/neuroscience of speech perception/production, and philosophy of music. Papers should be suitable for presentation to an interdisciplinary audience.

      Abstract Guidelines:

      • Please submit three separate documents: a Long abstract, a short abstract and a cover page including the author(s) information.
      • Long abstracts should be in US letter format (8.5" x 11" - not A4), with 1-inch margins on all sides, and in Arial 11 point fontThe long abstract text may be no longer than one page; an additional page for figures, tables, other graphics and/or references may be included.
      • Authors also need to create a seperate short abstract (no longer than 100 words).
      • Submit only PDFs.
      • Your submission should be prepared for a double-blind review, i.e. both abstracts should not mention the author(s) names and affiliations.
